A Lifetime of Memories Inspires a Gift to Camp Erdman

A Lifetime of Memories Inspires a Gift to Camp Erdman

Dr. John Corboy, a retired ophthalmologist and founder of the Hawaiian Eye Center, vividly recalls the summer he spent at YMCA Camp Erdman at just ten years old. "It was a magnificent experience—a pivotal moment in my young life," he reflects. "Living in a cabin with 11 other energetic boys and our counselor taught me invaluable lessons about myself and the world."

Dr. Corboy fondly remembers the unique charm of Camp Erdman, from its breathtaking natural surroundings to its tight-knit, communal environment. Mealtime was particularly special, with each cabin assigned its own dietitian and waiter. "We ate family-style, competing for neatness, and the prize? Seconds on dessert and a coveted trophy," he laughs. These moments of shared meals and friendly competitions forged a strong sense of camaraderie among the campers.

Beyond the fun and games, camp life also provided a crash course in life's challenges. Bringing together boys from all walks of life for two weeks created opportunities for personal growth. "There were tough times, but the lessons in overcoming adversity have stuck with me all my life," Dr. Corboy says. Whether it was the thrill of Capture the Flag or learning to navigate disagreements, camp was a transformative experience. "It was truly one of the most remarkable experiences of my childhood."

Today, as young people face a world of increasing complexity, Dr. Corboy believes that the camp environment offers a vital refuge for growth and learning. This conviction inspired him to establish the Dr. John Corboy Scholarship Fund, an endowed fund dedicated to providing financial assistance to camp participants.

"My goal is simple," Dr. Corboy explains. "I want camp to be accessible to every child, no matter their financial situation. Camps like Camp Erdman provide critical opportunities for young people to develop independence, interpersonal skills, and self-confidence during a formative time in their lives."

He encourages others to consider supporting the YMCA in similar ways. "If something is so impactful and transformative to a young person's development, it deserves all the generosity we can offer. My gift ensures that future generations can experience what I did."

As Camp Erdman approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, Dr. Corboy's generosity serves as a poignant reminder of the camp's lasting legacy. His contribution will help ensure that the life-changing magic of Camp Erdman continues to inspire and shape young lives for generations to come.

For those curious to learn more, Dr. Corboy's camp adventures are chronicled in his autobiography, The Life and Times of 'Little Johnny Corboy,' Volume 1.
