A Life of Service, A Legacy of Impact: Why David Livingston Chose to Give Back to the Y

At just 14 years old, Dave found himself standing poolside, whistle in hand, teaching swim lessons at his local YMCA in California. What started as a summer job quickly became a lifelong calling. By 18, he was a branch director. By his early twenties, an executive director. And even after being drafted into the Army, Dave’s compass pointed him right back to the YMCA—this time for a career that would span 25 years and stretch across California and Hawaiʻi.
Now retired from the Y, Dave remains deeply active in his community and professional life. He runs a successful financial advising business and also volunteers his time serving on numerous nonprofit boards—continuing to serve others, just as the Y once helped him.
Dave’s leadership journey, personal reflections, and enduring love for the Y are captured in his blog, thingsworthsaving.com—a digital memoir of a life lived with intention and gratitude.
Dave credits the Y with shaping his character and sharpening his leadership skills. “I’ve lived a charmed life,” he says. “I married my high school sweetheart, have a fulfilling career, and now enjoy time with our children and ten grandchildren in California and Hawaiʻi. The Y has been at the center of it all.”
Recently, Dave shared that he has included the YMCA in his estate plans, becoming a proud member of the Heritage Club. It’s his way of giving back to the organization that gave so much to him—and ensuring future generations have the same opportunities to grow, lead, and thrive.
Dave also offered words of wisdom for today’s Y leaders and fundraisers: “No one will care about 'you' until you show them how much you care. Just do the right thing—not because you expect anything in return—and somehow, it always comes back to you tenfold.”
Dave’s story is more than a reflection—it’s a roadmap. One shaped by service, deep values, and a commitment to leaving the world a little better than he found it.
Mahalo, Dave, for your heart, your legacy, and your belief in the Y.
